Tour Plan
Upon arrival at Casablanca airport in the morning, or after being collected from your accommodation in Casablanca, we will visit the Hassan II Mosque; afterwards by car and departure for Rabat (the capital of Morocco), where you will have 2 hours to enjoy the city and its monuments, after which we’ll continue on to the city of Fez, where we’ll take you to your accommodation.
Accommodation in a riad, including breakfast
After breakfast, your local Fez guide will meet you at your accommodation at 10:00 AM to begin the tour of the Medina of Fez el-Bali, one of the largest medieval sites in the world today. The entire medina, along with its souks and medieval alleyways, is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
We will enter through the Bab Boujloud gate and wander through the souk's narrow, maze-like streets, frequently dodging mules laden with heavy bundles.
We will visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, renowned for its intricate cedar woodwork, stucco, and marble and onyx decorations. We will also see the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss (the city's founder), the Andalusian Quarter with its mosque and Es-Sahrij Madrasa, and the former Dar Batha Palace, an Arab-Andalusian palace dedicated to the arts and traditions of Fez. Additionally, we will visit the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University—one of the oldest in the world, founded in 859 by Fatima Al-Fihri—and the tanners' and dyers' quarter, where traditional techniques have remained unchanged since the Middle Ages.
In the afternoon, your guide will drop you off back at your accommodation or within the medina.
Accommodation in a riad, including breakfast
After breakfast, we depart from Fez to the Merzouga desert, passing through Ifrane (the Switzerland of Morocco), where you will have 20 minutes to take photos and take a walk around the town square. We will arrive at the cedar forests of Azrou, where there are wild monkeys. It will be a great opportunity to take photos of Morocco’s natural landscape. We’ll have lunch in the Berber village of Zaida. We will continue crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains, enjoying the scenery of Midelt until we reach the small town of Rich. We will continue to the Ziz Valley, where we will make a panoramic stop for photos of the valley. In the afternoon, we will arrive at Erfoud, where we begin to feel the air of the Sahara with the Tafilalet oasis. We will continue on to Merzouga, where we will swap the vehicle for camels to spend the night in haimas in the Erg Chebbi desert near Merzouga.
Accommodation in haimas, including dinner and breakfast, and a live Berber music performance
We will wake up early to watch the sunrise from atop a sand dune before enjoying a relaxing breakfast. You will have the option to return to the hotel on camelback or in a 4x4. We will then continue our route, or if the weather is nice, you can spend some time by the pool or visiting the dunes; you can also go on an optional quad or buggy tour through the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Afterward, we will take the 4x4 to the village of Khamlia, home to the Gnawa—musicians of Sub-Saharan African origin who will delight us with their music and dancing while we enjoy a mint tea ("Berber whisky"). You can purchase a CD of their music for €10 or leave a minimum tip of €5.
Next, we will proceed to Taouz, where we will drive along the old Paris-Dakar Rally track to view some wonderful ancient rock carvings. We will then pass through the village of Jdaid, where we will have lunch at the home of a local Berber family (enjoying Berber pizza and tea) and have the opportunity to get a henna tattoo from a specialist (a tip for the henna artist is customary). If you are interested, you can also take a stroll through the village of Ouzina and its oasis. In the afternoon, we will head to our accommodation located in the Ouzina Desert, where we will spend the night at a beautiful Kasbah-style hotel and experience the wild, untouched beauty of southern Morocco.
Accommodation at the Kasbah Hotel Porte de Sahara Ouzina, including dinner and breakfast
In the morning, after enjoying a relaxing breakfast, we will take an off-road track to visit the nomads who live in the Ouzina region. Next, we will head to the barite mines to see the mine itself and how the miners work (barite is a mineral extracted there and exported to Europe to make glass).
Afterward, we will continue to the Bourika Oasis, where we will have a picnic lunch (Moroccan salad or similar, and grilled chicken). Following lunch, we will head toward the "Lost City" or Oubahlou (also known as the Portuguese city), which consists of ancient Portuguese ruins. We will take a walk around the area, and in the afternoon we will arrive at the Ramlia Oasis, where we can enjoy a tea at a local café and take a stroll around the village and its oasis.
Later in the afternoon, we will go to watch the sunset over the dunes of Erg Ouzina to soak in the peace and tranquility of this wild desert.
Accommodation at Riad Hôtel Porte De Sahara OUZINA, including dinner and breakfast
We will wake up and have breakfast at 9:00 AM before departing from the hotel toward Dades, continuing our 10-day / 9-night tour from the Ouzina Desert. We will pass through Rissani, one of Morocco's oldest cities and the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, stopping at the town exit to take a picture of the iconic desert gate.
Next, we will head toward Erfoud, where you can visit a fossilized marble factory if you wish, before continuing to the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad. We will then arrive at the Todra Gorge, where the riverbed has carved out sheer vertical canyon walls—a true paradise for rock climbers. We will have lunch there and take a walk to enjoy the gorge. In the afternoon, we will continue onward to the Dades Valley, where we will spend the night.
Hotel accommodation with dinner and breakfast
After breakfast, we will depart for the Rose Valley, where we will make a stop if you are interested. We will then continue our journey toward Skoura along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs until we reach Ouarzazate, the capital of Moroccan cinema. Here, we will stop at the Kasbah of Taourirt for a panoramic photo, followed by another photo stop at the nearby film studios.
We will then continue our route toward the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient 11th-century fortress and designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, crossing the Anti-Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tinififte pass. Around 12:00 PM, we will arrive at the famous village of Ait Ben Haddou, where you will have free time to visit the Kasbah and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, we will set off for Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains as we travel to Morocco's "Red City." Upon arrival, we will transfer you to your accommodation, leaving the rest of the afternoon free for you to enjoy Marrakech.
Accommodation in a riad, including breakfast
After breakfast, we will depart at 8:00 AM on a day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech. After a 3-hour drive, we will arrive at the ancient port of Mogador, built by the Portuguese on a narrow peninsula next to a sprawling crescent of fine sand. Perfectly sheltered by its impressive 18th-century French-built ramparts, the city is largely pedestrianized and divided into different quarters by a grid layout. From the top of the Skala, you can view the colorful fishing port, fortifications, and Spanish cannons.
Essaouira is also famous for its refined craftsmanship, especially thuya wood carvings delicately inlaid with lemon wood, ebony, mother-of-pearl, or copper and silver threads. In the afternoon, around 4:30 PM, we will return to Marrakech and drop you off wherever you prefer, leaving you with a free evening to enjoy your final night in Marrakech.
Accommodation in a riad, including breakfast
In the morning after breakfast, you can take a guided tour of the city with a local guide if you’re interested. At your flight’s departure time, you’ll be transferred to the airport, marking the end of our 9-day, 8-night tour from Casablanca to Marrakech and the Merzouga Desert in the Moroccan Sahara.
